Chemical Bonding and Molecular Interactions

Chemical Bonding and Molecular Interactions

Would you like to learn how to understand and predict the properties of chemical substances based on their molecular structure? If so, I recommend that you enroll in the online course Chemical Bonding and Molecular Interactions from the Universitat Politècnica de València, on the edX platform.

What will I learn?

The online structural chemistry course (available in free or paid mode), Chemical Bonding and Molecular Interactions from the Universitat Politècnica de València, will teach you the concepts and theoretical models to describe and explain chemical bonding and molecular interactions, as well as their applications in organic and inorganic chemistry.

This course is aimed at high school students, university students, and professionals who wish to learn or review the fundamental concepts of structural chemistry. Having notions of general chemistry and physics is recommended. The course has a rigorous and didactic approach, combining clear and detailed explanations with examples and activities that will help you consolidate your learning. The course also offers additional resources, such as readings, videos, and links of interest, which you can consult to expand your knowledge and delve deeper into the topics that interest you most.

This course is available on the edX platform, one of the most prestigious in the world for online education, founded by MIT and Harvard University. It can be taken completely for free or by paying a small fee.

Contents of the online structural chemistry course, Chemical Bonding and Molecular Interactions

In the course, you will be able to access the following contents:

  1. Chemical bonding. You will learn to define and classify the types of chemical bonds, such as ionic, covalent, metallic, or coordination bonds. You will also learn to use Lewis theory, valence shell electron pair repulsion (VSEPR) theory, and valence bond theory (VBT) to represent and predict the geometry and polarity of molecules.
  2. Molecular orbital theory. You will learn to use molecular orbital theory (MOT) to describe and explain the formation and stability of molecules, as well as their physical and chemical properties. You will also learn to construct and interpret molecular orbital diagrams for diatomic and polyatomic molecules, and to understand the concepts of bond order, bond energy, and dipole moment.
  3. Molecular interactions. You will learn to define and distinguish molecular interactions, which are attractive or repulsive forces between molecules, and to know their types and characteristics, such as Van der Waals forces, dipole-dipole forces, dispersion forces, or hydrogen bonds. You will also learn to relate molecular interactions to the state of matter, melting point, boiling point, and the solubility of chemical substances.
  4. Hybridization and resonance. You will learn to use the concepts of hybridization and resonance to describe and explain the structure and reactivity of organic and inorganic molecules, especially those containing carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, or sulfur atoms. You will also learn to recognize and differentiate the types of hybridization, such as sp, sp2, sp3, or sp3d hybridization, and to use resonance structures to represent molecules that have more than one possible bonding form.

Free or paid structural chemistry course

The course has two modalities: free and paid. The free structural chemistry course mode allows you to access all course content, including videos, readings, exercises, and discussion forums.

The paid modality also offers the possibility of obtaining a verified edX certificate, which accredits your participation and completion of the course. This certificate can be of great value for your resume, as it demonstrates your interest and competence in chemical bonds and molecular interactions. Furthermore, by paying for the course, you will be contributing to the Universitat Politècnica de València and edX being able to continue offering quality courses that are accessible to everyone. If you want to know more about the cost and benefits of this modality, I invite you to visit the course page on edX, where you will find all the information you need.

In conclusion, the online structural chemistry course (in its free or paid mode), Chemical Bonding and Molecular Interactions, is a course that provides you with an excellent opportunity to learn or review the concepts and theoretical models to describe and explain chemical bonding and molecular interactions, and to apply them to organic and inorganic chemistry. Do not hesitate any longer and register for the course now. You won’t regret it!
